You Are Not Your Team’s Security Blanket
No matter how brilliant your team is, there are always going to be stages of growing pains, trial, and error. I’ll be 100% honest… things don’t always run smoothly on my team. We are all human, after all. It took me a long time (5 years to be exact) to get to the place where I felt comfortable taking time off.
In order to get to there, I had to make sure I had the right team and systems in place.
This gave me the confidence and reassurance to know that my business would continue to thrive without me. It allowed me to create even better systems, processes, and SOPs, making everything run more smoothly both when I’m working and when I’m away.
Recently, I went on a trip where I was completely inaccessible. I wasn't on WhatsApp, Slack, or in my email inbox. I was completely out of office.
When I was away, my team totally crushed it. Our clients were supported, tasks were completed, and all projects were moving forward.
However, when I returned, the strangest thing happened. I came back and things started to fall through the cracks.
This happened because my team had access to me again and started coming to me with problems and questions that I knew they were more than capable of handling. As I reflected on this, I learned a very important lesson.
You are not the security blanket for your team and you cannot foster a culture of codependency.
I reminded my team that they were more than capable of supporting our clients and excelling in their roles. This reminder empowered them to own their roles and kick ass at them, with or without me.
Mistakes will happen and that is okay. It is an inevitable part of growth and business.
The important part is that they learn and don't make the same mistake twice. As I always say, this business is a safe container for people to flourish and flop in. My team is full of badass and capable women, and sometimes they just need to be reminded of it.
