Stop Filtering Your Story
Building a business is pretty terrifying on its own.
But when you add having to actually show up for it, it makes it seem pretty impossible, doesn’t it?
So what do you do?
You’ve checked off the boxes. You’ve created a website, signed up for your email marketing platform, made a string of posts that don’t perform, and you are left questioning what you’re doing wrong.
But you’ve likely left out yourself.
And not the “business you” or “credible, expert you. “ You’ve left out the authentic, personal you that people can relate to.
Being vulnerable and allowing people to see you in the good, the bad, and the ugly is the one thing you haven’t tried yet.
And it happens to be the HARDEST step.
Our world is driven by “perfection.”
We filter the story.
We show the clean workspace, but leave out the piles of dirty laundry you’ve neglected in your hustle.
We don’t say what we really think or believe.
We try to stay on-trend.
And all of these actions leave out the real, honest you that people are wanting to meet most.
So let’s say f*ck it from here on out.
Perfect isn’t real.
It’s this idea that makes us all feel a little more like shit. And no one wants to follow that.
Or buy from it.
They want to see the grit. They want to watch you struggle your way through the way that they are struggling their way through right now.
So instead of trying to be perfect, be real.
If the trend isn’t in line with you and your goals, don’t do it.
If you haven’t cooked a meal in a while and have Skip The Dishes on speed dial, share it.
Focus on providing value, sharing your hard-learned lessons, and even celebrating your failures with all of us.
Crack yourself wide open and let your audience and clients into your world. I mean your REAL world.
All the mini dance parties, the tears, the good stuff, the struggle, the lessons, and the human behind the business.
Show up as your imperfectly, perfect self.
Oh, and it’s going to feel weird at first. I’m not going to lie.
We want to see you.
Wrapping up those three proposals at 2 am, what you learned from an offer that flopped, the chips of the day that are getting you through, your empty fridge from working so hard, you haven’t had a chance to shop.
This is what connects you to your audience.
Being relatable makes you human and being human is something we all have in common.
Being authentic gives us hope.
So show up.
Embrace your not-so-confident self and know that the fact that you showed up as you are and shared your story to your corner of the world is what it means to be perfect.
