The Biggest Business Lesson I Learned From University

As business owners, it’s easy to feel like an imposter when you’re working in a space that is outside of what you went to university for. There can be feelings of guilt when you go down a path that doesn’t necessarily put the degree that you worked so hard to earn to use. Trust me, I’ve been there, and honestly, I don’t use anything I learned from my 4 years of university to run my business… except for one thing. Read on to learn the biggest business lesson I learned from university, that I actually use on a daily basis!

The Biggest Lesson I Learned From University

After attending university and working my ass off for 4 years, there’s a lot of things I learned that I no longer use in my business. However, there is one HUGE lesson I learned that I use on a daily basis as an entrepreneur, business owner, and leader.

That lesson is… discipline!

I learned that nobody can show up and put the work in for me. It’s up to ME to show up, chase my dreams, and own the path I’m on. It’s up to me to set boundaries, stick to them, and speak up when something isn’t working for me or my team.

Running a business, managing clients, and leading a team requires discipline. It requires showing up each day with a grateful heart and a desire to serve others. It requires asking for help when and where I need it and honouring my boundaries and needs. It requires trying new things, failing, and embracing opportunities for growth.

The Value of Life Lessons

Other than discipline, I don't use a single thing I learned from university to run my business. Now, I’m absolutely NOT saying that you shouldn’t attend university. The experiences and life lessons I learned during my time there were irreplaceable. I could never put a price on the value and lessons learned during that time.

Was it necessary to attend university to run my business? Nope! You do not need a 4 year degree to build a successful business. On the other hand, you can go to university and end up not using your degree at all and take a complete 180.

The point is: Don't make decisions based on the norm.

Don't make decisions for your life and career based on what everyone else is doing, and for damn sure, don’t sit on the sidelines because you think you aren't qualified enough to chase your dreams and do what you feel called to do.

You have everything you need to succeed right inside of you, and with a little discipline, you can achieve your wildest dreams!
